  • Tinkerbell & Dakota – Southern Maine Family and Pet Photographer {Emily Michelle Photography}

    November 13th, 2010

    When I asked Dakota and Tinkerbell’s mom what her favorite thing was about them, she laughed and said she couldn’t possibly pick just one thing. Because she loves everything about them – she loves Tinkerbell’s silly personality, and Dakota’s soulful eyes. She loves Tink’s expression when she’s lost in thought. She loves the way Dakota’s ears perk up when they’re about to go for a run. She tells me that when they were looking for a dog they were only planning to adopt one, but after seeing both they knew that they could never just choose one. They knew that they had to bring both of them home to love forever.

    In true Dane style, Tinkerbell is a velcro dog. She loves people and being near people, as close as possible in fact. When she’d lose patience for posing, she’d attach herself to the nearest human leg, and my attempts to get down on the ground were met with a very large dog doing her best to sit down in my lap. It’s hard to resist such assertive affection.

    Dakota keeps more to himself. He’s content to let his sister take most of the spotlight, preferring to sit back and watch the action swirl around him. His mom calls him an ‘old soul’. After such a hard early life, it’s evident that Dakota is happy just to be where he is, surrounded by love and family.

    A wonderful session with two wonderful dogs. ♥

    Oliver – Southern Maine Family and Pet Photographer {Emily Michelle Photography}

    October 18th, 2010

    While staying with a friend in Austin last week, I spent a lot of time hanging out with her six-month old kitten, Oliver. It’s been over six years since we brought home a stray pregnant kitty and raised her kittens in our house and underfoot. Mama cat and her kittens are grown now (though still underfoot), so I had started to forget what it’s like to live with kittens. Now that I’m back home, it seems as though my own cats are a) very large, and b) very mellow. Photographing a kitten like Oliver is like trying to catch lightening in a bottle.

    First things first – Southern Maine Family and Pet Photographer {Emily Michelle Photography}

    October 3rd, 2010

    Little Colin is the first child for his parents, Doug and Meghan. Meghan is the first in our little circle of girlfriends to have a baby – the first wedding I photographed earlier this year was also one of “the girls” – and now this session with Colin is the very first newborn session I’ve done.

    Firsts can be many things: exciting, overwhelming, captivating, nerve-wracking. For better or worse, firsts are memorable.

    And of course, Colin did all of the things that babies will do during a photo session – peed (on dad), pooped, squirmed, fought sleep, squirmed some more. He was fairly alert for being just 8 days earthside.

    It took some quiet coaxing, a white noise machine, and a space heater cranked up to maximum before Colin finally drifted off into deep baby sleep.

    Once Colin was asleep, my assistant/sister helped put a new blanket into place while I held a soft and completely relaxed baby. Honestly, the whole day was worth just those few moments of holding in my hands one perfectly formed little person.

    Toward the end of the session, Colin was definitely ready to be done, but he let us capture one more first – their first family photo.
