The lenses on the right are my regular lenses, my go-to glass. They’re great for portraits taken outdoors or with additional lighting, which is primarily how I shoot. They’ve also spoiled me. The lenses on the left (rented from the fabulous folks at borrowlenses.com) are the ones I like to use for indoor weddings – they’re great in low light and their wide aperture gives a really nice softness to the background. They are also HUGE.
The bride-to-be asked me how I was going to shoot the ceremony. Being familiar with the church and its layout, I just told her, “I will be moving around a lot. Like, a lot.” And carrying these babies around for seven hours will be like having a job and a gym plan all-in-one.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and Father’s Day isn’t far behind. The gift of a custom photography session will be a wonderful surprise for mom, dad, or grandmom and granddad!

And I’m loving it, aren’t you? Outside our front windows the lilac tree is starting to bloom.

There’s a pair of cardinals nesting in the garden.

I don’t even like insects that much, to be honest, but I still thought this guy was cool.

And of course, morning sunshine means happy cats.

I hope that everyone is enjoying this beautiful New England spring!
Eight Things to Know About Martigan:

1. He’s named after Madmartigan, Val Kilmer’s character in the film Willow. Great movie. Great name.

2. Most of the time, he just goes by Marty.

3. He’s a Chiweenie (dachshund + chihuahua).

4. He gets his long hair from his mom.

5. He hates being cold.

6. He likes to snuggle under the covers.

7. He’s constantly finding ways to sneak cat food.

8. Well…he doesn’t always have great manners.

Even though I happen to know both of them pretty well (as in, that handsome man is my younger brother), like many people preparing to have their pictures taken, Stephen and Lexi were a bit…anxious. Concerned about wearing just the right thing, or worrying about just the right setting for their photos. That’s normal and, of course, everyone wants their photos to be as perfect as possible. But I finally texted Stephen the day of the session and said: I don’t want you guys to stress or overthink this – just be comfortable and pick a place you love. The photos can only capture what you’re already feeling.

They decided they wanted their photos taken at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. There’s a memorial bench on Marginal Way that has a plaque dedicated to our grandmother and cousin, and Stephen thinks it’s one of the best views in Perkins Cove. I think he’s probably right.

And in the end, Stephen and Lexi made things easy. I love it when a subject (or subjects) can act like I’m not even there. I don’t mind giving directions – I may point out where the light is nice or give some suggestions for a fun or unique pose. But the best part of the job is being able to simply step back and allow people to act and interact naturally with each other. Then, and only then, will they interact naturally with the camera and those are the moments that I want to capture.
